Mr Fitch Suffered from Polio
when he was young and as a result of this the muscles in his right leg
wasted and became weak resulting in a 5 inch shortening of the leg.
As he got older a full length
leg brace was required to support his leg,
the one that is pictured here
was one that he donated to me with two pairs of his boots.
The top ring has lost its padding
and the knee joint has worn beyond repair.
the boots only have a 31/2
inch raise to allow for the leg to swing through when he walks,
if the boots were made to compensate
for the 5 inch shortening it would not be possible to walk with the full
leg brace, as it would not be possible to swing the leg through as the
shoe would always be in contact with the ground.
