Mr Johnson's condition occourred
when as a young child he contracted
Tuberculosis and was sent
to an isolation hospital near Great Yarmouth, where he spent many months
and was only returned home after he was certified clear of infection.
During his stay in hospital
it was noticed that it had destroyed most of his left hip so a number of
operations were carried out to remove the infected bone this actually shortened
the femur by 2 inches and then as there was not much of the hip joint left
it was fused together preventing any further movement at an angle of 20
degrees a compromise of straight or bent so that he would be able to sit
and walk.
He was eventually packed of
to a school for lame and chronically sick children where he gradually recovered.
As he grew older and taller
his leg stopped growing and is now 5 inches shorter than his right leg.
He eventually married and got a job driving lorries and had safety work
boots built up see pictures.
